Maths Home Learning

We believe that memorisation and repetition of key number facts (such as times tables and number bonds) are important aspects of learning in Maths that can be reinforced at home, with guidance.

This view follows the idea of developing a ‘mastery curriculum’ and is supported by research highlighting that ‘learning key facts to automaticity ‘frees up’ working memory to focus on more complex problem solving rather than reaching cognitive overload trying to calculate simple operations’ (NCETM, 2018).

To support this approach, each half-term, a ‘Key Facts’ newsletter will be sent home by year groups identifying the important facts the children should practise and learn. In class, time will also be spent practising and learning these facts, with class teachers assessing the children’s progress towards being able to recall them easily.
