At Dallas Road Community Primary School we promote the fundamental British values outlined by the government and seek to reinforce them regularly. Some examples of how we promote them are outlined below:
Each year the children in each class discuss the school 'Dallas Expectations' and what each of them means both in their classroom and in the wider school environment.
Assemblies discuss rights and responsibilities and again children are encouraged to consider and discuss what they are entitled to and also what they should be taking responsibility for.
The children have a say in who should represent them on the school council and their views and opinions are taken seriously e.g. the children decide which charities are supported each term. The children's ideas do become a reality e.g. having hand dryers in some of the toilets to reduce paper towel wastage.
The Rule of Law
The importance of laws and expectations are regularly re-iterated in assemblies and in classrooms and the children understand that the way that they behave impacts on others and expectations are required in order for a school, wider community and country to function successfully. The children recognise that they need to take responsibility for their own actions and having a half-termly 'value' to explore alongside the principles of 'Building Learning Power' e.g. respect, empathy, collaboration lead to a successful learning environment for all.
At Dallas Road children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms in a safe and supportive environment with clear expectations and jointly established boundaries. Children are educated through the classroom sessions with school colleagues and external agencies as to how they can keep themselves safe e.g. on the internet. They are encouraged to make a commitment to complete homework tasks, to join extra-curricular clubs and to be a good role model to their classmates and younger peers.
At Dallas Road their is an expectation that everybody treats one another with respect. It is a value that is regularly re-iterated alongside the current monthly value and all members of the Dallas Road family are expected to treat one another equally - child to child, adult to child and adult to adult.
Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs
A huge strength of Dallas Road Community Primary School is its multi-cultural make up and we are very proud of the positive interactions between children and adults with different faiths, beliefs and backgrounds. Children are taught about the beliefs of their peers (by adults and their peers) through assemblies and R.E. lessons and opportunities are taken to welcome visitors into school to discuss religious beliefs and to make visits to places of worship. Children are taught to be respectful of one another's beliefs and to recognise that we should all value everybody's right to have a particular faith and set of beliefs. We were delighted to receive the 'School of Sanctuary' award in December 2018 recognising our work to create a safe environment that is truly inclusive for all and our work with refugee and asylum seeker families.
At Dallas Road we will actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British values including extremist views.
